Planting and care guide

General guidance for planting a container-grown tree. Check each product page for the tree's sun and water needs.

Before planting

Keep the tree in its container in partial shade and water it until you plant. Call 811 before digging to locate underground utilities.

Planting

Dig a hole two to three times as wide as the root ball and no deeper than it. Set the tree so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Backfill with the native soil and water thoroughly.

Mulch and water

Spread 2–3 inches of mulch over the root area, kept a few inches away from the trunk. Water deeply and regularly while the tree establishes, especially through its first Texas summer.
